Iphone and GPS mounting on a motorcycle for track days

Post by Tonyplod »

Hi Harry
I am a new user of your app, I have purchased lap timer petrolhead, I am going to use it next Wednesday for there first time, I am riding a motorcycle, using an iPhone 4s, with a go pro hero 3 silver and an xgps160 (providing it arrives on time). my question is where to mount the phone and GPS module?. Can i keep the phone in my pocket, does it need to be vertical or horizontal or does it not matter?.
On the GPS module can that be mounted under the fairing panels, or should it be external?.
i have added a charging lead to the bike, but would prefer not to have the phone mounted if I can help it, as I would not like to loose it on the track.
Thanks in advance.

As long as the GPS is outside, you can store away the 4S. As LapTimer needs to be active in foreground, you must not put it into your pocket. The screen will be touched accidentally and anything may happen. So I'd suggest to store it in the glovebox (if you have one). For the current version 18.x, you need to calculate acceleration / lean for your bike anyway, so the orientation is not relevant. You may continue like this for v19 or place the phone nearly flat tilted 70 degree to the front (see 4.2 on https://www.facebook.com/HarrysLapTimer ... =1&theater).

The GPS should have a "free view to the sky". So the best option is usually to tape the XGPS behind your windshield.

hello Harry,

just for me to ensure that I understand. I've got a xgps160 (bought on your advice). so for location (as tracking) I understand I don't care about the place of the iphone whether it doesn't touch any piece of my skin (...) ; nevertheless for all acceleration matters (lean, lat g, etc..) is it mandatory that the iPhone be placed nearly flat ? or it doesn't matter, all is calculated from gps data ? (I'm a bit lost)

thanks

To measure lean, you need to place the phone nearly flat like shown in Quick Reference illustration #4. As a fall back - in case acceleration couldn't be measured or has been measured wrong, you can calculate acceleration from GPS: Lap List ‣ any lap ‣ Recalculate ‣ Acceleration.

Independent whether you are using an external mouse or not, the phone needs to be on and the screen must not be touched accidentally. If e.g. you have a glove box, store it here with some padding so it can't move. The external GPS allows you to store the smartphone, otherwise a mount on the steering rod / behind windshield is mandatory for good GPS reception.

Thks harry.

I'm with motorbike. So no glovebox or windshield...

Just a bit complicated to have ext gps + iPhone + gopro all gathered on handlebars.
For the time being I think about tank bag with gps and iPhone inside and gopro on handlebars.
