How to overlay random laps over 16 hrs video

Post by Rudy G »

Hello,
I am new to this forum but have used lap timer for a few years and love it! I recently upgraded to the GP edition.
I am posting this in the hope that you can point me in the right direction. I suspect there is some thread covering this in these forums.
We race jalopies in endurance races (24 hours of Lemon's) and I already use my 16GB I phone 5 as a lap timer and the video is recorded by various GoPro cameras. I just purchased a Hero4 Silver and want to know if there is a way to overlay lap timer data onto the GoPro video. These races are typically around 16 hours and we have huge video files to work with. I don't want to overlay all of them just every driver's best 5 laps or so.
Can this be done?

Please check the last chapter in http://www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDoc ... hapter.pdf to get an idea how videos recorded externally can be overlaid. With a 16GB iPhone, you will constantly run into memory shortage - it will not be very convenient. I'd suggest to extract the laps you want to overlay using some video editor (on your desktop). Afterwards, transfer the video to the iPhone (check the docs) and associate individual laps with this extracts for overlay.

Hello,
Since my last post I have upgraded my phone to a 64GB iPhone 6 Plus. I also have LapTimer Grand Prix Edition version 19.0.7(64) and Harry's MultiCam v19.0.7(64). We have a Lemon's race this coming weekend and I was hoping for a bit of advice on how to handle our video recordings. I usually leave the phone in the car the whole day (7-8hrs) to record laps and view lap times while driving.
We run 2 GoPro camera's. A Hero 4 silver and a Hero 3 Black with 64gb cards. We swap cameras every 1.0-1.5 hours and then download the video to a pc and clear the memory card to prepare the camera to return to the vehicle at the next pit stop. Will I be able to overlay videos that come after the first pit stop? Unfortunately the phone is mounted too far away to be manipulated while driving.

I'd suggest to use LapTimer in standard mode without video recording. Triggering the HERO's with changing devices will be to cumbersome and generating a video that long on the iPhone (LT will record both with the internal can and the HEROs) is something not verified.

So you will get a number of laps on your iPhone and a set of videos from HERO on your PC.

The process to generate overlaid videos will be as follows: you transfer one video to the iPhone (the process has become very easy, the video documentation will be updated to give you a step-by-step), select any lap covered by this video, and add the video. You will need to select the position in the video the lap selected ends, so it is a good idea to write down the lap range plus video name when you copy videos to the PC. NB: the HEROs will probably split videos when they reach 4GB, so you get more video than you may expect.

Once you have aligned this one lap, LapTimer will automatically align all other laps covered by this video, so you need to do the alignment once for each video only.

Once this is done, you can overlay any of the laps covered by the video (or even the whole session).
