Overlaying lap timer on external video

Post by wallis »

I tried using my iPhone 5S to record video and data - unfortunately, in Vintage Racing, there's so much stuff flying around on the track that I picked up a crack on the iPhone.

So I've switched to Plan B - I record data on my iPhone which is kept low down in the cockpit so it out of the way of any flying debris. I then use a GoPro Hero 3+ to grab the video. And then I need to combine the two.

I have 2 questions about combining:

1. My lap timer info is in the iPhone and the video is in the GoPro - but I can easily transfer it to my iPad or Macbook Pro.

Can anybody tell me if I can do the matching up of video and lap timer info on my iPad or MBP? It looks, from the website, that I have to do it on the iPhone itself - but that is a real fiddle with a small screen, especially having to synchronise crossing the start line on the video with the lap timer start. It would be so much easier to do it on the iPad.

The iPad has Laptimer installed - is it possible to export the timing files from the iPhone to iPad and do the whole lot there?

2. My Lap list appears to be a series of separate files - I have laps 1 of 7, 2 of 7, etc. Are they really separate files, or is the data held in one big file? If they are separate files, does that mean I have to synchronise video and data every lap?

Thanks anyone for your help. This looks like it would be a great way to overlay lap data on video, but I'm not sure the app is quite there yet.

Cheers

1. Export the full session of laps to .hlptrl format and send it to an email account you can read on your iPad. To do this, select any lap of the session from Lap List, select Export, select Session as scope and .hlptrl as format. Once the mail arrives on the iPad, touch the .hlptrl attachment and select LapTimer to open / import it.
2. To assign a full session of laps, assign the video to one lap and let LapTimer align the rest: select the lap from Lap List on the iPad, press Edit, press New Video, select the (transferred) video and follow the instructions to sync both. When asked, agree to let LapTimer align the full session of laps.

Finally, in any of the session's lap, press Overlay, select the lap range you want, and start the process.

Thanks, Harry - that was painless! I've brought the Lap List onto the iPad, which was the real challenge I was facing. However, as the GoPro records in 4 gig "blocks", I need to merge two video files together before putting them in iPhoto and thus accessible to the iPad so that I can merge to the Lap data. But I'm sure it won't be a problem - thanks for your help
