Export gear for overlay apps (Trackvision, Dashware)

Post by ben »

Please update the export file (LapTimerGPSRecDB4Dashboard) which is for Trackvision/Dashware to include the gear (very nice feature of Laptimer!) so I can see it in my overlays :)

I also wonder, since Harry is a genius, would it be too much work to figure out an option that can extrapolate 1hz/5hz/10hz data to 25hz for smoother playback in an overlay?

I haven't investigated Dashware yet but Trackvision doesn't seem to have this capability and I'm wondering if it could be done natively in Laptimer. I guess this would dramatically increase the size of the output files and it is probably better done at the destkop but I figured I would ask anyway ;)

I have a Qstarz 10hz GPS I use which seems to work nicely so far with laptimer but it's still not smooth enough.

Hi,

You are right, export of gear is missing. Will add this in v15.

Genius Harry already implemented interpolation at frame rate (i.e. 30Hz) for Video Overlay within LapTimer. He'd expected a software like TrackVision to do this on its own

Thanks for the quick response!

There is an app called 'pinto' that does extrapolation but it is only made for a certain type of output file from yet another Trackvision app 'Pandora'.

I'll have to post up on the Trackvision forums to see if anyone can look at the Laptimer export files and put something together. Even a script (perl/vbs/etc) would be fine for me.

Is v15 due before October 7th?

I have a date with a certain famous road course named Sebring then and I'm hoping I have my whole Laptimer/Video/data collection setup finished by then. I just wrapped up wiring a mic to the engine bay directly for use with my Gopro (cracked it open and soldered in a 3.5mm TRS connection to replace the existing mic). I have my WLAN OBDKey on order already and I'll be trying that with Laptimer as soon as I get it in.

I am trying to replace using a slightly more cumbersome setup based on a Netbook running Winxp with Racechrono to mix the GPS/OBDII data. Video of an outing last year here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9HS0DPyjXk

I have been using Roqybt4 on my jailbroken iPhone to communicate with a Bluetooth OBDII device I have (OBDLINK) but it always seems to drop out after a few minutes. Roqybt4 doesn't work with multiple bluetooth devices yet anyway so I kind of have to order the OBDKEY WLAN. Roqybt4 seems to work just fine with the 10hz GPS device though so as long as the OBDKEY WLAN is stable I'm hoping everything goes smoothly :)

Slightly off-topic for a feature request but I figured you might appreciate the story behind my post :)

Wow, impressive installation! :-)

Can I get some more details on this? What do you mean by 'drop out' and which app do you use here? There are quite some issues with dropping WLAN connections and OBDLink, KiwiWifi etc. I hoped this does not happen using BT...

I think the RoqyBT app is actually crashing when used with OBDII... my log files will show rpm data for a minute or two then it just stops and I only see GPS. After getting back to my driveway I looked at the phone and saw there wasn't any RPM data showing up and loaded RoqyBT and it wasn't showing that it was connected to the OBDII bluetooth device any more.

Update rate seemed to be around 5hz. I wonder if the OBDKEY WLAN is any better?

The author of that Pinto app I mentioned was gracious enough to share the source so I'll be modding it to work with Laptimer files now :)

@Ben,
Hi,
If you experience any issue with roqyBT4 app (for GPS or OBD), please feel free to contact me at support@roqy-bluetooth.net !
I don't think that roqyBT crashed in your case (but you can be sure by installing crash reporter app from cydia). It looks like the bluetooth connection was lost for an unknow reason. I've never seen it on my tests.

Which OBD key are you using ?
Update rate for OBD seems more related to your car bus, not to the interface.

Regards,

Roqy

I was going to do some more testing before reaching out to you on your own forums roqy, I certainly didn't expect to see you in this thread :)

I am using OBDLINK's Bluetooth device.

On a related note, I got a script working that interpolates data from the Laptimer dashboard CSV files now for smoother overlays.

I have some minor issues to sort out with the interpolation math but it is working pretty well thanks to the Pinto author sending me the source to his app.

My OBDKEY WLAN shipped, hopefully I receive it next week.

Do you already use the latest RoqyBT version and OBD add-on ?
Keep us posted, cause I have the Qstarz 818XT 10hz with RoqyBT4 and a Kiwi Wifi OBD receiver. I have dropping WLAN connections, so I wanted to buy a Kiwi Bluetooth OBD.
But if 2 BT devices at the same time won't work well, I will not buy it. Maybe I should wait for iOS 5 ;) ?

I have an OBDLINK Bluetooth that I hope to use with roqybt4 once it supports two simultaneous devices.

Both the obdkey wlan and plx kiwi WLAN drop every 60 seconds for 5-10 seconds. Nothing I've done seems to help. This happens on either my iPhone or iPad.

OBDKEY advertises it can be set to infrastructure/access point mode (hopefully more stable) though they dont support it yet. Kind of odd to advertise as a feature but whatever... I'm hoping they let you configure it soon, perhaps some combination of access point mode, forcing 802.11b / 802.11g, or locking it to a specific channel will help.

I'm going to test connectivity with my laptop next, sitting in the car with it to see if it drops just like it does with my iPhone or iPad. If I still see the 60 second drop and I have no fixes from either obdkey or plx I'm going to return them. I have a feeling it will be OK though and the problems are related to poor ad-hoc wifi capability of the Apple devices.

I'm also getting an iPhone 4S in within the next few weeks and I'll deal with a tethered jailbreak on it so I can use roqybt4 with my QStarz. We'll see if it works any better when it comes to wifi stability...

Hi Harry,

Is it possible to add the RaceChrono format as an export type? This would allow use of the free RaceChrono2AVI utility.

Cheers
