I am having problems getting the gates marked right. I suspect it has to do with the orientation of the phone when I mark the gate. Its it held vertically with the back of the iPhone facing the direction I'll be driving through the gate, or flat with the back of the camera facing the ground and the top of the camera facing the direction of travel?

It is best to use the last option "flat with the back of the camera facing the ground and the top of the camera facing the direction of travel".
