iPhone 6 Performance?

Post by tsmith8605 »

Anyone have experience yet using LapTimer with an iPhone 6. I would assume the processing is faster, but how is video image stabilization? Does the iPhone 6 GPS receiver still work at 1 Hz or at a higher rate?

Any other comments from anyone who's tried it?

Thanks,

I have no new benchmarks performed so far. Cinematic video stabilization seems to not fit the requirements on track and needs to be turned off. GPS update rates are 1 Hz for all smartphones - any brand. Only specialists like us require more. The QStarz is not Apple certified and does not work without a jailbreak. Not recommended, please check the "good" options listed here: http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html

Thank you. I am disappointed to hear that the Cinematic video stabilization won't improve things.

I am aware of the GPS units you recommend but I am testing out LapTimer and did not want to invest in the GPS or OBD add-ons until I was sure that I would continue to use LapTimer. That the GPS is not improved is not surprising, but one can hope. I did search the iPhone 6 specs looking or GPS update rate, but could not find the spec.

Anyway, thanks for the responses.

Hey Harry, when you say turn Cinematic video stabilization off..... is that just turning that video stabilization switch off in Lap Timer App? Or is that something that that needs to be turned off in iOS somehow? I went to track last weekend and video shot with my iphone 6 plus was very jerky... so much so that it was hard to watch. Thanks.

In LapTimer / Video View / Options. This hints iOS it should not use video stabilization. The problem is iOS will make its own decision, it really considers any app setting as a hint it may or may not follow.

And people say Apple is different from Microsoft.

Tried the iPhone 6 this weekend on the Nürburgring and I must say that the video output is really bad.

Watching the video makes you almost sea sick (No - it is not my driving style that does that... :) )

Anyway: Is the solution to go back to iPhone 5 or keep my fingers cross that Apple will help us fix this issue?

Turn stabilization off and lock autofocus and exposure. In case you use a RAM mount as recommended - make sure the mount arm is oriented vertically (suction cup in the top and the phone in the bottom). That's actually the best can do. I agree that although the cam has certainly become better (still images: a lot better) over time, all the automatic features do not work well on track. Furthermore all the "off" settings above are hints only and iOS will actually do what it thinks is good for you :-)

Just more reason for much more robust GoPro support :)

I did some laps at Circuit of the Americas the other weekend and HLT + GoPro3Black + X150GPS worked amazing! Just getting everything connected and powered on in the right sequence was a challenge. Now if I just didn't have to record iPhone video at the same time ;)

Thanks Harry!

Any update on better video when using the IPhone 6 ? This seems like a step backward rather than forward.
