as title, or doesn't it matter also does my iPhone need to be mounted upright or can it be tipped back a bit, mounting is on a Lotus 7 style car dashboard

Looking into the picture linked, you can select any of portrait or landscape (z axis) orientations as long as rotation is a multiple of 90 degree. You can rotate the device around x as long as the device is not positioned flat. Finally, you can rotate around y (so it points to the driver).
