You need to transfer the video to Photos to allow LapTimer to access it. Videos stored in the Gopro app are not accessible.
GoPros split longer video file into 4GB chunks. They need to be joined before they can be processed in LapTimer.

When overlaying a video, select any lap in focus from Lap List and press Video / Export. In case you want to get more than one lap overlaid, you can extend the range to multiple laps here.

But best practice is as follows: watch your videos with overlay using Video / Play (instead of Export). This can be done instantly without waiting for the result of an overlaying process and without additional space required. Generating new overlaid videos is actually making sense when distributing videos only. And it makes sense for selected laps, not sessions or track days. Your friends will want to see short clips with focus on something special. ;-)

Combining gadgets always adds extra steps, using the internal cam is a lot more convenient...

I just found a very useful feature. If you are a GOPRO+ user, you have unlimited cloud storage. When GOPRO uploads to the GOPRO cloud it automatically combines the video segments into one file. Then you can download it back to your camera roll. No 3rd party application, just have to be patient.
