OBDII drops within 10 seconds of connecting

Post by Cleggmeister »

Hey folks, new to HLT and just bought the Android mid-range app. Splendid so far - just need a decent phone mount for my RenaultSport Twingo RS133 :)

Anyway, my cheap unbranded ELM327 bluetooth OBDII sensor won't stay connected to Harry's Laptimer for more than a few seconds. It's a cheap one but it works with Torque and other apps, so before I buy an expensive one I wanted to check I'm not missing something.

Attached pictures are outputs from Torque and ELM analyser, and from Harry's with the connection briefly on and then dropped...

I have gone "Expert" and switched ELM type from request/reply to "Automatic Replies" - this makes no difference.

Any thoughts please, or should I just drop £100-£150 on a decent mount and OBD, and maybe higher frequency GPS sensor? I don't track much - I just like messing around with gadgets and wanted a webcam equivalent! :)

Many thanks for the support!

Please have a look into the FAQ on Debugging OBD connections. These drops usually mean LapTimer is receiving some invalid input. Well possible this is an adapter incompatibility. You may try Expert Settings ‣ OBD Tweak / Adaptive Timing ‣ Enabled before doing a full logging. The "Optimized" feature frequently fails for car and adapters not fully supporting the OBD / ELM standard.

Adaptive Timing Enabled - regrettably no change, connection drops in 10s or so. Please could you link me the FAQ and I'll try it all over the weekend? Many thanks from Scotland!

Since I bought the OBDLink Scantool MX thingy I have not had the problem - everything just works - hence it's worth buying a better ODB dongle rather than trying to make a $5 ELM327 piece of junk do anything. Thanks all! :)
