I think Ive got the gopro set up correctly but I have one question. When going through my iphone would there be a video shown while recording? or is the only indication that its connected the grey vid camera icon?

LapTimer does not provide a real time preview while recording. In Video Preview (in case you use both external and internal cam), the GoPro will be shown as PiP using a placeholder. But the recommended view while driving is Timer. You get the video indicator in the top - and, depending on your GoPro's mounting position, from the big red LED indicating a recording.
