External Microphone Support

Post by cwatson »

I have a cable that allows me to connect an external mic/headset to the iThing. Voice recording and video recording with the camera app work properly with the external mic. HLT always uses the internal microphone.

Thanks,
Chris

So no external microphone plugged into the iPhone 4s will work at this time with the application - is that correct?

Harry, will the external mic option ever be available?

I guess my question is will Harry's Lap Timer petrolhead edition ever work with a hard wired/connected (NOT blue tooth or Wi-Fi) external microphone for sound with an iPhone 4s? I am putting the microphone directly on one of the air filters (370Z) but I cannot get any sound from the engine when I plug it into the iPhone. All I get is the sound from where it is windshield mounted phone is - wind noise. The car is very quiet hence the needed for the external microphone. I am using this microphone and it seems to work for everything on the iPhone but HLT. Thought I would ask.

I believe it is a question of the right adapter and microphone type. Software wise, LapTimer captures the channels iOS is making available. I need to say I have it not working either - but did not put too much effort in it.

So it appears there is some external mic support as of v17.0.5. See this thread for discussion:

I believe the TRRS Splitter Cable is the secret ;-) I have ordered one and will test it.

I'm not sure if it's on the hardware or software side...I had the mic working with the Iphone camera (but not on HLT) in January on the old iOS and HLT. However, I did not spend much time with it and may have made a mistake on the wiring or test procedure. The TRRS cable is definitely required. I did some testing without it and got no sound. I hope to add a cable to the car stereo from the headphone out on the TRRS connector so it can read lap times aloud (and the audio will get recorded to video through the microphone). I am always bothering my passenger to read the lap times even with the timer showing for 30s :).

Hi again,

Today I received the splitter cable (http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MUYH ... hone+cable) and the Olympus ME52W microphone. After various tests (and even soldering an adapter myself) it seems that the named splitter cable is making the difference. It records sound using both Apple's video app, and LapTimer in video mode. As this configuration is not reported as an external audio source by iOS again (cf. the switch I had added in Video View / Options), but simply replaces the internal microphone, I will remove the external mic switch in one of the next versions again.

Thanks for reporting on the splitter cable, really happy there is finally a working configuration :-)

Thanks cwatson and Harry - I have ordered the cable and I have my fingers crossed. My car is so quiet when I am doing a DE event that I really need the external mic so I can hear the engine and tires. I will let you know if I have success.

Have a good one you two. :D
