Re: External Microphone Support

Post by nismo09 »

Well, I installed the cable splitter on my iPhone 4S going to my mic cable running to my engine and it didn't make a difference (just plugging in the mic cable directly into the iPhone. I put the mic on the engine but the video still kept the same recording sound from inside the car - wind/iPhone mic. Has anyone figured out how to override the internal iPhone mic to a "plunged in mic" to capture that sound????? I really would like to have my engine sound coming through into my videos with my Harry's application!!!!!!!

For me the above splitter / microphone combo just worked (without any special setting in LapTimer). Please make sure you use the right end of the splitter to plug in your micro. :-) Furthermore, not all types of micros are supported by the iPhone (I'm sure there are specialists around to comment on this).

Just an FYI - I have tried every product/solution CWATSON has suggested above and none of it works.

Harry, will the external mic option ever be available?

I guess my question is will Harry's Lap Timer petrolhead edition ever work with a hard wired/connected (NOT blue tooth or Wi-Fi) external microphone for sound with an iPhone 4s? I am putting the microphone directly on one of the air filters (370Z) but I cannot get any sound from the engine when I plug it into the iPhone. All I get is the sound from where it is windshield mounted phone is - wind noise. The car is very quiet hence the needed for the external microphone. I am using this microphone and it seems to work for everything on the iPhone but HLT. Thought I would ask.

Hey NIsmo09,
Glad to hear your mic issue is resolved but I do have a question for you. I own a 09 370Z as well (owned since 3/09 and almost at 82,000 miles). Why are you mounting the mic on the airbox as oppose to by the exhaust? If I recall correctly, it'll give you engine noise, that's it. High pitch engine noise and it's really not that desirable. I mounted mine on the level of exhaust right on the rear bumper between exhaust. It's right below the license plate. I have a crappy mic which I'm going to upgrade by next racing season. I have hKS exhaust. lmk what you think:

PS: I usually have my overlay (http://youtu.be/6mgKcUyM7jU) but from staring position to timing laser was soo far off, harry's lap timer wouldn't recognize it :(. I actually have to take this up with Harry how I can increase distance.

Metalgearsolid,

Are you using a Standing Go at the staging line or a Go at the timing line? If everything is working correctly, I can get fair agreement between HLT and the event timer using a Go at the timing line and a Stop at the finish. The only problem is that if I use the iPhone internal camera, I lose the start because of the delay between crossing the timing line and starting the recording.

You can start the video ahead of automatic start - this gives you enough footage to add an intro or at least have enough to overlay the complete lap. Just press the manual record button in LapTimer's Video View.

Actually to this day I can't get Harrys setup to work - even using his recommended cables. Total bummer.

As for mounting the mic on the air box - I want to catch not only the engine sounds but the tires when I am in turns. It is a perfect location to capture both. I currently do this with an Olympus digital recorder (on the intake box) and then use software to mesh that created wave file into my go-pro camera video. I just wish I could do the same thing with my 4s and Harrys software. That way, it is an all in one solution and I get Harrys telemetry on the final video as well.

Sorry or the late response. Been busy with life. ;-)

BTW - I like the sound you get on your setup. Here is the sound I get on my setup. It is totally different don't you think????

Harry wrote:Hi again,

Today I received the splitter cable (http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MUYH ... hone+cable) and the Olympus ME52W microphone. After various tests (and even soldering an adapter myself) it seems that the named splitter cable is making the difference. It records sound using both Apple's video app, and LapTimer in video mode. As this configuration is not reported as an external audio source by iOS again (cf. the switch I had added in Video View / Options), but simply replaces the internal microphone, I will remove the external mic switch in one of the next versions again.

Thanks for reporting on the splitter cable, really happy there is finally a working configuration :-)

I have brought the exact set up above and have the Mic mounted (via an extension cable) on the inside rear panel between the two exhausts. Problem, The IPhone Mic still records unwanted speech from inside the cabin? should this happen? shouldn't the fact the other Mic is plugged in disable the IPhones internal Mic?

Please advise

Thanks in advance.

It should... But I can't say for sure. Do you get a clear input from the external mic?
