Accuracy of 0-60 times with 1Hz GPS

Post by mecheng1 »

I was wondering how accurate the 0-60 mph or other acceleration times can be, if they are based on a 1Hz phone GPS signal. Must be +/- 1 second ?

Interpolation technics allow an accuracy of up to 0.05s for 1 Hz GPS. The results depend mostly on the GPS
accuracy achieved, not update rate. In case you are interested in the math, see the Train the Trainer document. It has a slide on interpolation included: http://www.gps-laptimer.com/TrainTheTrainer-Harrys.pdf

0.05s should be considered the best case, 0.1s is more realistic with the built in GPSes.

Thanks so much Harry. So it's based on kinematic equations, assumption of constant acceleration, and interpolation between GPS fixes?

As long as it is accurate enough to demonstrate that my Jaguar F type V8S is faster than my brother's AMG C63s, I'm happy. :D
