Best OBD adapter option for iOS + Bluetooth

Post by THX723 »

Hi folks,

Apologize if this has been covered already. I didn't see any in the search.

If one were too stick with the Bluetooth and iOS combination, what is the best OBD adapter option?

PLX Kiwi 3 perhaps?

Thanks in advance!

I don't get the question, but these will help:

www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/ios
www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/android

Sorry for the typo, which mind of caused some confusion. What I meant to ask is what is the best Bluetooth adapter for iOS. It appears the PLX Kiwi 3 is the answer from the link you provided. Thanks for your help, Harry!

Yes, it the one I use currently. But keep in mind you will probably need to upgrade the firmware using an old or a friend's Android. I assume new Kiwi3 builds will come with the .2 update when shipping, but older ones will probably still be on .0 and need the update to work properly.

Silly question ...

So I just received my PLX Kiwi 3 in the mail ... how do I go about checking the firmware revision # to determine if I need to update?

Thanks!

LapTimer - Administration - Sensor List - Kiwi 3 - Info.

Certainly while connected.

Hi Harry,
Finally got around to testing. I attached a screenshot of the info page. Not sure I see where the firmware number is displayed ... what am I doing wrong?

At any rate, HLT seems to be able to connect @7Hz initially. Sometime it would only connect @3-4Hz, other times not at all. I guess that would indicate it may have the older firmware?

I'm sorry, it is not listed here... There are probably other ways to check it, but the following works definitively:

Install the free app LightBlue from AppStore.
Start it and walk nearby the Kiwi plugged in.
You will see the Kiwi in the LightBlue app's list of "Peripherals Nearby".
Select it.
Once the dialog on the Kiwi is coming up, find the firmware version in the row name "Firmware Revision String".

Harry - Do you have an updated Bluetooth OBD device you recommend? It’s kind of urgent since I need to have it delivered by Thursday this week for a track day at Laguna.
